Sisters of Zion

The Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA), known as Sisters of Zion at our church, are delighted to share with you the rich history and meaningful activities of our group.

A History of Service and Giving

The foundation of our organization can be traced back to the Ladies Aid Society at Zion, which was established in 1885. With an initial membership of 18, our purpose was to beautify the House of God and support the sick and needy. As time went on, we formed various groups such as the Sewing Circle in 1910, the Women’s Missionary Society in 1938, and the Dorcas Circle in 1961.

In 1964, all the groups merged to become A.L.C.W. or American Lutheran Church Women. We continued our activities, including the popular cooking and selling of apple butter each fall. Over the years, we had different circles such as Dorcas, Ruth, Martha, and Hope, which met independently. We also had collective gatherings under the name WELCA. Eventually, we renamed ourselves Sisters of Zion, as all women in the congregation are members.

While we no longer hold regular meetings, we continue to engage in activities as a group. Here are some of the projects we have undertaken recently:

Recent Highlights of Our Activities

Fall Conference

Several members attended the Fall Conference of the Central/Southern Il Synod, where we had the opportunity to hear inspiring speakers, engage in worship, and participate in service projects for the homeless.

Greeting Card Ministry

We have a dedicated member, Debra Schuette, who sends birthday cards to our members aged 80 and over, anniversary cards to couples celebrating 50 or more years, and get well cards. The Sisters of Zion cover the expenses for this heartfelt ministry.

Cleaning Kitchen

In the spring, we organized and cleaned the kitchen, ensuring that everything was in order. We also worked in the storage room to improve accessibility.

Planting Flowers

The Sisters of Zion take care of purchasing flowers for the outside containers, while Walter and Iris Friesner kindly plant and water them.

Rummage, Plant, and Food Sale

Our annual rummage sale was a tremendous success, thanks to the dedicated women who volunteered their time and effort to make it happen.

Fleece Blankets

Ten women joined forces to create six cozy fleece blankets for needy children in our school, providing them with warm Christmas gifts. It was a joyful and fulfilling experience.

Christmas Breakfast

We had a delightful breakfast, courtesy of Sundae Best. We enjoyed a devotion on “Baking up Christmas,” played games, won prizes, and contributed essential items to the Care Center. We extended an invitation to the ladies from Zion Lutheran in Gillespie to join us.

Mother-Daughter Banquet

This well-attended event, which we have sponsored for many years, unfortunately had to be paused due to COVID-19. We hope to resume it soon.

Funeral Lunches

The Sisters of Zion graciously serve funeral lunches for church members, offering support during difficult times.

Thankoffering Tradition

Our Thankoffering tradition dates back to the 1800s when women acted together as “cent” or “mite” societies. In gratitude for blessings received and when funds were limited, each woman set aside offerings throughout the year. When the Women of the ELCA was formed in 1987, we committed to continue this tradition. Each year, thousands of congregations give Thankofferings to support the life-changing ministries of Women of the ELCA.

We distribute Thankoffering boxes in January for use throughout the year. We encourage you to place your box where you can see it and, when you receive a blessing, show your thankfulness by making an offering. Together, we can accomplish more than we could ever do alone, expressing gratitude for all that God has given us and fostering hope for the future.

Thank you for your support and participation in the Sisters of Zion.
